Abstract

Stable solid compositions are obtained by mixing sulphur dyes with an alkali sulphide and/or hydrosulphide and with a hygroscopic substance constituted by (a) an alkali hydroxide, or (b) a hygroscopic alkali salt of a weak inorganic or organic acid, or (c) an alkali salt of an aliphatic or aromatic hydroxy compound or a sulphurized derivative thereof. The components are mixed in the dry state; thus, the dry components may be mixed together, or the dry dye may be mixed with a dried mixture of the other components, or a crude melt of a sulphur dye may be dissolved in caustic alkali solution and evaporated, and the product mixed with an alkali sulphide and/or hydrosulphide. The compositions may contain the usual diluents, e.g., sodium chloride, carbonate or sulphate. In the examples: (1) Immedial indone R, sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide, the sodium salt of a sulphurization product of phenol or cresol, and a little glycerol are mixed together to form a dry composition; (2) Immedial indone violet B, sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide, and the sodium salt of a sulphurization product of phenol are mixed together, with or without sodium formate, to form a dry composition; (3) Thiogen new blue 3GL, sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide, and sodium formate or (example 4) potassium thiocyanate are mixed to form a dry composition; (5) sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide, the sodium salt of a sulphurization product of phenol, and urea are mixed in a wet state; the mixture is dried and then mixed with Katigen brilliant green 3G; (6) a crude melt containing the dye prepared by sulphurizing a mixture of m-phenylenediamine and m-toluylenediamine is dissolved in caustic soda solution, evaporated, and then mixed with sodium sulphide.
