Abstract

Vat dyes containing sulphur are made by treating a vat dye, obtainable according to Specification 299,972, [Class 2 (iii)], from the reaction products of anthrones and glyoxal by means of an alkaline melt, with an acidic condensing agent which is not a trivalent metal halide suitable for the Friedal-Crafts reaction with or without such a trivalent metal halide and with one of the following: sulphur, a halide of sulphur or of sulphurous acid, an alkali metal sulphide, hydrosulphite, thiosulphate, or xanthogenate. In examples, the product obtained according to Specification 299,972 from 2-chloranthrone is treated with (1) sulphuric acid and sulphur chloride; (2) chlorsulphonic acid, aluminium chloride, sulphur chloride and thionyl chloride; (3) chlorsulphonic acid or oleum and sulphur; (4) chlorsulphonic acid and sodium sulphide; (5) chlorsulphonic acid and potassium xanthogenate. Also, in examples, (6) the product obtained from anthrone and glyoxal is treated with chlorsulphonic acid and sulphur chloride; and (7) the product obtained from 2.6-dichloranthrone and glyoxal is treated with oleum and sulphur.
