Abstract

Sulphur dyes are made by treating p-nitrosophenol or a hydroxynaphthalene at a raised temperature with a sulphurizing agent in the presence of a copper compound. The sulphurizing agents specified are elementary sulphur or an alkali-metal polysulphide made by heating an alkali-metal sulphide with sulphur and an alkali-metal hydroxide. Copper compounds mentioned are the sulphate and chloride and hydroxynaphthalenes specified are 1- and 2-naphthols, 1-nitro-2-naphthol, 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and 1:5- and 2:6-dihydroxynaphthalene. Other substances which may be present during the reaction are ammonium salts such as the chloride and sulphate, urea and 2-ethylhexanol. Examples are given. The dyes dye cellulose fibres from a sodium sulphide or hydrosulphite vat khaki tints.
