Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula:-<FORM:0936785/IV(a)/1> in which one X is an -NH2 group and the other X is an -OH group, R is an aralkyl or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group free from -OH groups and water-solubilizing groups and Y is hydrogen or an -SR group. The dyes are made by reacting a dye of the formula <FORM:0936785/IV(a)/2> wherein one X is an -NH2 group and the other X is an -OH group, Z1 is halogen or a sulphonic acid group, Z2 is hydrogen or has the meaning given for Z1, with an alkyl or aralkyl mercaptan or by treating a compound of the above formula in which Z1 is mercapto and Z2 is hydrogen or mercapto with an alkylating or aralkylating agent. Examples are given. The dyes dye and print in blue shades from an aqueous dispersion fibres of cellulose esters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene terephthalate.
