Abstract

1 : 4 - Dihydroxy - anthraquinones, free from acidic groups imparting solubility in water, of the formula <FORM:0957144/C3/1> in which Aryl is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group are made by condensing an aryl mercaptan with a compound of the formula <FORM:0957144/C3/2> in which Y is halogen, nitro or a sulphonic acid group. The invention also comprises anthraquinones of the formulae <FORM:0957144/C3/3> and <FORM:0957144/C3/4> wherein R is an alkyl radical of up to 6 carbon atoms. The products of the process may be subsequently chlorinated or brominated. The dyes dye and print synthetic fibres of cellulose esters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and aromatic polyesters from aqueous dispersion in scarlet-red shades.
