Abstract

Shaped structures of copolymers containing nitrile groups and anionic groups are dyed with cationic dyes from aqueous dyebaths in the presence of a dyeing assistant of the formula R'-A-R1-(O)x-R wherein A is a benzene or naphthalene ring, R' is one or more radicals each of which may be H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy-alkyl, aryl, possibly substituted hydroxyaryl, nitro, nitroso or alkylamino or the groups -(CH2)yCOOR, -O-CO-R, -(CH2)z-CHO, -CONR\yF.R\yG, -SO2R\yF, -SO2NR\yF.R\yG or -SO-R\yG, R is aryl or alkyl which may be substituted by R\sv, (R\yF and R\yG being H, alkyl, alkoxy or aryl, g being 0-3 and z being 0-5), R1 is a bridging member having a dipole moment greater than 1.7 and x is 0 or 1 and when x is 1, the phenyl radical carrying R\sv may contain up to 3 nitro groups, the use of unsubstituted monodi- and trinitrobenzoic acid alkyl esters being excluded. R1 may be -CO-, -SO-, -SO2- or =PO.OR. The assistants may be applied as aqueous dispersions either before or together with the dyestuff; they may be applied as organic solutions. Examples are given and a number of assistants are specified.
