Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble anthraquinone dyes having the formula <FORM:1010745/C4-C5/1> where Z is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons, Y is a divalent radical of the formula -O.C(R1R2)CH2-, -O.CH2CH2CH2-, -OCH2OCH2- or -O.C(R1R2)CH2.O-where R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons and the benzene ring X, which may be substituted by halogen, methyl or alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbons, is attached to the anthraquinone nucleus through a carbon atom which is ortho or para to an oxygen atom through which Y is attached to said benzene ring. The dyes are made by reacting in sulphuric acid solution a compound of the formula <FORM:1010745/C4-C5/2> and a compound of the formula <FORM:1010745/C4-C5/3> the hydrogen atom being ortho or para to an oxygen atom through which Y is attached, and subsequently desulphonating the product, for example by vatting and oxidation. The dyes dye polyamide, cellulose ester, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefine and polyester fibres from aqueous dispersion in blue shades.
