Abstract

The invention comprises anthraquinone dyes and dye mixtures of the formula <FORM:1056954/C4-C5/1> wherein Hal is Cl or Br, R is H or a 1-4 C alkyl, X is H, halogen, -OH, alkoxy or 1-4 C alkyl and n is 0.5-2. The dyes may be prepared by halogenating a b -(hydroxy- or alkoxy - phenyl) - 4,8 - diamino - 1,5 - dihydroxy-anthraquinone with a halogen or halogen-yielding compound, possibly in the presence of boric acid and a halogenation catalyst. If the reaction is carried out in organic solvent the first halogen enters the a/q. nucleus; in sulphuric acid the first halogen enters the phenyl radical. Examples are given and the dyes prepared may be used to dye fibres of cellulose esters, polyamides and aromatic polyesters.
