Abstract

271,537. Smith, W., Thomas J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1926. Leuco flavanthrones and esters thereof. - Flavanthrone or its derivatives is reduced in sulphuric acid solution by means of a metal; the leuco compound thus obtained is very stable in air but is easily oxidized to the parent dyestuff in an alkaline medium. The products can be directly used for dyeing and printing after addition to alkaline baths or printing pastes with or without hydrosulphite. The leuco compounds may be also converted into stable esters by treatment with esterifying agents such as alkylsulphuric halides in the manner described in Specifications 186,057. 202,630, 202,632, 231,889, 245,587, 248,802. 258,626 and, 260,638; no special precaution to exclude air during the esterification is necessary; the esters may be used for dyeing and printing by the methods described in Specifications 245,587 and 247.787. According to examples flavanthrone and dichlorflavanthrone are reduced with copper powder in concentrated sulphuric acid at a low temperature: on diluting the acid solution slighily the dihydro compounds crystallize out.
