Abstract

Leuco sulphuric esters of vat dyestuffs are made by reacting the leuco compound of a vat dyestuff, or a metal salt or a complex compound of the leuco compound, in the presence of a phosphoric acid tris-dialkylamide of the formula <FORM:0956570/C3/1> where the symbols R are straight-chained or branched alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and may be the same or different, with sulphur trioxide, chlorosulphonic acid or a chlorosulphonic acid ester at a temperature in the range of about 10 DEG C. to 60 DEG C. An inert organic diluent may also be present. Phosphoric acid amides specified are the tris-dimethyl, -diethyl, -dipropyl and -dibutyl derivatives. Examples are given.
