Abstract

Sulphuric esters of difficulty esterifiable leuco vat dyes of the anthraquinone series are made by treating the dye, in a mixture of a -picoline and diethyl-cyclohexylamine containing 10-60 per cent by weight of the latter, and in presence of finely-divided copper or brass with chlorosulphonic acid, the ester is then converted to its water-soluble salt. Minimum proportions of the chlorosulphonic acid, bases, and metal relatively to the dye are laid down. The chlorosulphonic acid may be introduced as such or as a mixture of sulphur trioxide and hydrogen chloride or as addition products of each with one or both bases. In examples, the following dyes are converted to their leuco-sulphuric esters by the method stated;-(1) 1.4-dibenzoylaminoanthraquinone, (2) 1.4-(di-p-chlorobenzoylamino)-anthraquinone, (3) 1-(p-phenyl-benzoylamino)-4-benzoylamino-anthraquinone, (4) 1-(p-benzoylamino)-benzoylamino - 4-benzoylaminoanthraquinone, (5) 1.4-bis-(p-phenyl-benzoylamino)-anthraquinone, (6) 1-(p-phenyl-sulphone-benzoylamino)-4-benzoylaminoanthraquinone, (7) 1-(p-N-dimethylsulphamidobenzoylamino-4-benzoylamino or p-chlorbenzoylamino anthraquinone, (Specification 636,691), (8) 1.5-dibenzoylaminoanthraquinone, (9) 1-(21-methylbenzoylamino)-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone, (10) 1.5-di-(21-methylbenzoylamino)-anthraquinone, (11) 1.5-di (21.41-dichlorbenzoyl)-aminoanthraquinone, (12) 1.5-di-41-chlorobenzoylaminoanthraquinone, (13) 1.8-dibenzoylamino-anthraquinone, (14) 1-benzoylamino-5 or 8-chloranthraquinone, (15) 1-(p-phenylbenzoylamino)-5 or 8-chlor or 4-methoxy-anthraquinone, (16) carbazolized di-(51 or 41-benzoylamino-11-anthraquinonyl)-2, 8-diamino-chrysene or fluoranthene, (17) carbazolized 81, 811 dibenzoylamino-1, 41, 11, 111-trianthrimide, (18) the tetracarbazole from 1, 4, 5, 8-tetra-anthraquinonylaminoanthraquinone, (19) the condensation product from 1 mol 1, 3-dichloro-2-methylanthraquinone with 2 mols 1-amino-4-benzoylaminoanthraquinone.
