Abstract

Hydroxyl-terminated esters from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol are converted to high molecular weight linear polyesters by condensation in the presence, as catalyst, of boron trioxide. The chain length of the polymers may be limited by the addition for example of a mono-carboxylic acid. In the example terephthalic acid diglycol ester is fused with added boron trioxide and propyl benzoate and heated in an atmosphere of nitrogen until splitting off of glycol ceases. The pressure is then reduced and heating continued and maintained for half-an hour after reaching a temperature of 270-280 DEG C. The molten condensate is forced from the vessel by nitrogen pressure and cooled in water. The polymer is shredded, washed, dried and spun into threads.
