Abstract
Poly-(sulphuric acid esters) of N-acetylchitosan are prepared a solution of chitosan acetate in glacial acetic acid with chlorosulphonic acid in the presence of pyridine. The reaction is preferably carried out by adding the above solution to a molten mixture of chlorosulphonic acid and pyridine, and then heating to a temperature of 80 DEG C. The degree of polymerization of the product may be controlled by the degree of polymerization of the chitosan acetate used, and the temperature at which the sulphonation reaction is carried out-lower temperatures producing products of a high degree of polymerization. A fractionation step may be introduced into the process, before or after the sulphonation reaction, to obtain particular polyesters. One detailed example is given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 740,152.
