Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of polyethylene glycol terephthalate, a preliminary condensate of low molecular weight and having an intrinsic viscosity up to 0.3, prepared from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol is completely condensed by heating it for a short time to temperatures ranging from 310 DEG to 350 DEG C., preferably from 315 DEG to 335 DEG C. under a reduced pressure of between about 1 and about 0.05 mm. mercury with agitation of the fused mass until a polyethylene glycol terephthalate is obtained which is capable of being spun. When the condensation has been terminated the fused mass is advantageously cooled to 270 DEG to 280 DEG C. before being discharged. The preliminary condensate may be prepared by reacting 1 mol. of dimethyl terephthalate with 2.2 to 2.5 mols. of glycol. The process may also be applied to a mixture of the preliminary condensate prepared from terephthalic acid and glycol with admixtures of other dicarboxylic acids and/or glycols. When the process is effected continuously a molten preliminary condensate may be heated to 270 DEG C. at reduced pressure, then passed through a closed channel at the reaction temperature and then after cooling again to 270 DEG to 280 DEG C. the mass can be cooled with water or be spun directly. Specification 578,079, [Group IV], is referred to.
