Abstract
A copolyester is made by condensing ethylene glycol with a mixture of 90-15 mol. per cent of terephthalic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof and 10-85 mol. per cent of orthophthalic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof to produce a mixture of glycol tere- and orthophthalates and thereafter polymerizing these glycol phthalates. The copolyester may be used for the production of films (which may be orientated), moulded and extruded articles, fibres and coatings. Some of them are soluble in chloroform, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethane, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, nitroethane and a mixture of phenol and tetrachloroethane. In an example, ester-interchange was effected between ethylene glycol, dimethyl ortho phthalate and dimethyl terephthalate by heating at 197 DEG C. in presence of litharge. The temperature was maintained at 197 DEG C. while the pressure was reduced to 0.1 mm. of Hg. and the excess glycol distilled off. Then the temperature was raised to 260 DEG C. and the pressure increased to 1 mm. of Hg. and finally the temperature was raised to 280 DEG C.
