Abstract
A crystallizable linear copolyester is made by reacting a glycol of formula HO(CH2)nOH, where n is 2-10, from 5 to 35% by weight, based on the total weight of the acid components calculated as the acid form, of an acid component in the form of isophthalic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof and 95 to 65% of an acid component in the form of terephthalic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof, under ester-forming or ester-interchange conditions to form a mixture of glycol esters and polymerizing this mixture in presence of antimony trioxide. As ester-interchange catalyst there may be used litharge, lithium hydride or a mixture of lithium hydride and zinc acetate. The copolyesters may be converted into films, filaments, fibres, ribbon and tubing. In examples copolyesters were made by heating a mixture of dimethyl terephthalate, dimethyl isophthalate and ethylene glycol in presence of lithium hydride and zinc acetate dihydrate until evolution of methanol ceased, adding antimony oxide and triphenyl phosphate and heating under reduced pressure p and finally annealing the resulting copolyester at 115-140 DEG C. under nitrogen pressure.
