Abstract

In a process for making highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalates by reacting a glycol of formula HO(CH2)nOH (where n is 2-10) with terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof, and polycondensing the resulting glycol terephthalate, at least the polycondensation step is effected in presence of an organic titanate, especially an alkyl or aryl titanate. An additional polycondensation catalyst may be used, e.g. antimony oxide, and when starting from a dialkyl terephthalate, an esterinterchange catalyst may be used, e.g. zinc acetate. Part of the terephthalic acid may be replaced by another dicarboxylic acid (e.g. isophthalic acid in the form of dimethyl isophthalate) and a mixture of two glycols of the above series may be used. Titanium dioxide, which acts as a delustrant, may also be present during the polyesterification. In examples: (1)-(9) ester-interchange was effected between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in presence of tetramethyl or tetrabutyl titanate and in some examples also in presence of zinc acetate at 149-218 DEG C. and the resulting glycol terephthalate polycondensed at 275 DEG C. and 1 mm. of Hg. pressure; (10) terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol were reacted at 230 DEG C. and 35 lbs./sq. inch and the resulting glycol terephthalate polycondensed at 275 DEG C. and 0.3 mm. of Hg in presence of tetramethyl titanate and titanium dioxide. Subject-matter in Specification 769,220 is disclaimed.
