Abstract

In the manufacture of high molecular weight polyesters by reacting a dicarboxylic acid or an ester thereof with a dihydric alcohol, a metal titanyl oxalate is used as the catalyst. The cationically bound metal may be an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, magnesium, antimony, tin, zinc, lead, manganese, cobalt or cadmium. Polyesterification may also be effected in the presence of known catalysts, e.g. zinc acetate, phosphorus compounds, e.g. triphenyl phosphite, or delustrants, e.g. titanium dioxide. Specified dicarboxylic acids are terephthalic, itaphthalic, 4:41-diphenyldicarboxylic, sulphonyl-4:41-dibenzoic, naphthalene dicarboxylic, 5-sulphoisophthalic, adipic and sebacic acids. Specified dihydric alcohols are ethylene glycol and 1:4-dimethylol cyclohexane. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene glycol with dimethyl terephthalate or a mixture thereof with the sodium salt of 5-sulphoisophthalic acid.
