Abstract

In the preparation of highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalates a bis(omega-hydroxy-n-alkyl)terephthalate is polycondensed in presense of manganous acetate as a catalyst. The bis(omega hydroxy-n-alkyl) terephthalate may be formed from a glycol and a di-alkyl terephthalate by ester interchange, using manganous acetate also as catalyst in the initial step. Other catalysts may be used with the manganous acetate in the ester interchange or polycondensation steps. Suitable auxiliary polycondensation catalysts are antimony compounds, e.g. antimony salts especially the acetate, double salts such as potassium antimonyl tartrate, or salts of antimony acids, e.g. potassium pyrantimonate. Antimony oxide may also be used. Examples describe the preparation of polymers from ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalates using as catalysts (1) and (2) manganous acetate, (3) and (4) manganous acetate and antimony trioxide. Titanium dioxide is added during the polycondensation step in example (3).
