Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate is made by the polycondensation of bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate using as a catalyst an imide of a dicarboxylic acid. Antimony trioxide may be used as an additional catalyst. In examples, dimethyl terephthalate was transeserified with ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate and the product polycondensed in the presence of titanium dioxide, phthalimide having been added before the ester-interchange reaction or before the polycondensation reaction.
