Abstract
In the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate by polycondensing bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, there is used as a catalyst (a) a 1,11-diketone or an oxime or oxime salt thereof, (b) an alpha-hydroxyketone or an oxime or oxime salt thereof, (c) an aliphatic monoketone, (d) an aromatic monoketone or (e) an alicyclic ketone. The catalyst compounds may be substituted by one or more alkyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, carboxylic acid, carboxylic ester or carboxylic salt groups. As an additional catalyst, antimony trioxide may be used and polycondensation may also be effected in the presence of titanium dioxide. The bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate may be made by effecting an ester-interchange reaction between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate and the polycondensation catalyst may be present during the ester-interchange reaction.
