<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to an improved process for the manufacture of polymethylenic terephthalates with a high degree of polymerization, and particularly of polyethylene terephthalate.
Polymethylenic terephthalates with a high degree of polymerization are linear polyesters of great interest as fiber and film (film) forming materials. They are obtained by a polycondensation reaction, by heating a derivative of terephthalic acid capable of entering into a condensation reaction with itself, for example, bis (hydroxy-alkyl) terephthalate. The terephthalic acid derivative can be formed by any known process, for example by reacting glycol with terephthalic acid, or by an ester exchange reaction between a glycol and an ester of glycol. terephthalic acid, or by reacting an alkylene oxide with terephthalic acid.
Of the polymethylenic terephthalates with a high degree of polymerization, it is polyethylene terephthalate, derived from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. 51 which is best known as a fiber and film forming material. In the most widely used process for making polyethylene terephthalate, the first phase is an ester exchange reaction between ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate to form bis (beta-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate. This compound is then polycondensed under reduced pressure and at elevated temperature.
In order for the production of these linear polyesters to be carried out in a reasonable time, it is necessary to use a catalyst. Many catalysts have been proposed for this purpose, but we have found that those which provide a high production rate also tend to cause rapid degradation of the polymer. Another disadvantage of many known catalysts is that they provide a yellowish colored or cloudy looking polymer. For the manufacture of fibers a color as close as possible to white is required and for the preparation of films a clear and shiny polymer is required.
The present invention comprises an improved process for the manufacture of polymethylenic terephthalates having a high degree of polymerization by polymerizing a bis (hydroxy-alkyl) terephthalate with as catalyst an aluminate soluble in the reaction mixture.
It is preferable that the aluminate is easily soluble in glycol. The uniform distribution of the catalysts is favored by their use in the form of fine powder dispersed or dissolved in the glycol. Suitable aluminates are in particular those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals.
To obtain an almost white polymer, the amount of catalyst used should be chosen so that the polyester finally obtained contains less than 0.05% by weight of metallic aluminum.

(beta-hyd.roxy-ethyl) -terephthalate, it is preferable to use in addition to the aluminate an ester exchange catalyst. Many such catalysts are known, but it has been found that calcium acetate employed with aluminate gives polyesters of a satisfactory color which do not tend to degrade when stored as is. molten. Both catalysts can be added at the start of the ester exchange reaction if desired.
The invention is illustrated, but not limited by the following examples, where parts are by weight.
EXAMPLE 1.-
100 parts of bis-hydroxy-ethyl-terephthalate are melted in an oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere in a 4-liter vessel fitted with a

agitator and comprising two outlet pipes, one of which is connected to a vacuum pump and the other is closed. The melt is stirred and 0.045 part of sodium aluminate is added thereto, then the temperature is brought to 280 ° C. over two hours. When the temperature reaches 245 C the pump is started and the pressure reduced to less than 1 mm, the reaction continuing for 11/4 hours. The agitator is then stopped, the vacuum pump is disconnected and the gas space above the molten material is filled with pressurized nitrogen.
By opening the other tubing, the molten polymer is driven out by nitrogen pressure, cooled in water, dried and cut into chips.
The product is a clear polymer, softening point 265 C, intrinsic viscosity (determined in ô-chloro-phenol) 0.71. Filaments of satisfactory color can be obtained from the polymer by melt spinning and drawn into useful textile yarns.
EXAMPLE 2.-
100 parts of dimethyl terephthalate and 75 parts of ethylene glycol are melted in a deoxidized nitrogen atmosphere. At 150 ° C., 0.08 part of calcium acetate and 0.06 part of calcium aluminate dispersed in 1 part of ethylene glycol are added. The ester exchange takes place in a temperature range of 160 to 215 C at atmospheric pressure. The methanol is removed by distillation, and the reaction is completed in 3 1/2 hours.
The bis-hydroxy-ethyl-terephthalate is carried in a 4 liter stainless steel container. capacity and 0.5 part of titanium oxide dispersed in ethylene-glyeol is added. The polymerization is carried out as in Example 1 in two hours.
The product is a white polymer with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.69 (determined in o-chlorophenol). Filaments of satisfactory color can be obtained from the polymer by melt spinning and drawn into useful textile yarns.
EXAMPLE 3.-
The process of Example 2 is repeated using 0.08 part of calcium acetate and 0.03 part of sodium aluminate. For a mass of 350 liters, the ester exchange is obtained in 7 hours and the polymerization at 280 ° C. lasts 6 hours. No titanium oxide is added.
A clear product is obtained with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.70 with a softening point of 263.5 C.
EXAMPLE 4.-
The process of Example 1 is repeated on a 4-liter scale with 0.06% zinc aluminate as catalyst instead of 0.045 part of sodium aluminate and adding 0.5 part of oxide. titanium. After applying a vacuum (at 245 ° C.), the temperature is brought to 275 ° C. The polymerization is carried out in 1 2/3 hours under a pressure of less than 1 mm and the polymer is extruded as in Example 1.
The product is a clear polymer with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.65 (determined in o-chlorophenol). Filaments of satisfactory color can be obtained from the polymer by melt spinning and drawn into textile yarns.
The intrinsic viscosity n mentioned in the examples is determined in solution in o-chlorophenol at 25 ° C. and is a measure of the degree of polymerization. It is calculated according to the formula. n = ns c where ns is the specific viscosity, i.e. flow time of the solution -1 flow time of o-chlorophenol
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and c is the concentration of the solution in grams per 100 cm3.
The polymers obtained in the preceding examples were compared with a polymer prepared under the same conditions with a known catalyst, lead oxide. In all cases, the color of the polymer obtained with an aluminate as a catalyst is greater than that of a polymer containing lead oxide.
