Abstract

Film- and fibre-forming polyesters are made by polycondensing a bis-(glycol ester) of a dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of antimony metal powder having a particle size of less than 3m . The bis-(glycol ester) may be prepared by an ester-interchange reaction using the acetate of calcium, strontium or zinc as catalyst. Many glycols and dicarboxylic acids are specified but the actual examples describe the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol.
