Abstract

1,195,097. Polyalkylene terephthalates. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 20 Oct., 1967 [20 Oct., [1966, No. 47897/67. Heading C3R. Polyalkylene terephthalates are made by reacting a dialkyl terephthalate with an alkylene glycol in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, a titanium containing polycondensation catalyst and a catalytic quantity of at least one compound possessing at least one active-hydrogen compound and having a pKa value of about 8 to 10 at 25‹ C. Specified are :- transesterification catalysts-zinc acetate; polycondensation catalysts-alkyl and aryl titanates and their partial hydrolysis products (including polymeric titanates), titanium carboxylates and titanium halides; active-hydrogen compoundshypophosphites of Mg, Ca, Mn, K and Zn which are gradually decomposed during the reaction to phosphine and phosphates, hydroxyisophthalic and hydroxyterephthalic acids and their alkyl esters, phthalimide and carbazole. Examples describe the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol.
