Abstract

Self-extinguishing synthetic resins are obtained by polymerizing at least one monomeric polymerizable compound, if desired in the presence of at least one polymer of these compounds and/or of at least unsaturated polyester, in the presence of at least one polymerization-initiating agent and in the presence of a phosphorus compound <FORM:1028620/C3/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or methyl group and R1 is an allyl group or an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms which may be substituted by chlorine or bromine. In the examples: (1) methyl methacrylate is polymerized with 1 - methacrylylethane - 1,1-bis-(phosphonic acid dimethyl ester) as phosphorus compound (2) styrene is polymerized with the phosphorus compound of Example (1) and (3) an unsaturated polyester is polymerized with styrene and the phosphorus compound of Example (1).
