Abstract

In a process for the stepwise production of moulded articles from moulding masses of unsaturated polyesters and copolymerizable monomeric compounds with a content of polymerization catalysts and gellers and optionally of fillers, there are used as polymerization catalysts 1,2-substituted ethane derivatives <FORM:1041040/C3/1> in which R1 and R3, which may be the same or different, are aromatic radicals, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or aromatic radical, R4 is an aliphatic or aromatic radical and X and Y, which may be the same or different, are optionally blocked hydroxyl groups and/or optionally substituted amino groups and/or halogen atoms. Catalysts mentioned are benzpinacone compounds; acetophenone-, xanthone- and fluorenone - pinacone compounds; 1,2 - di - (3-pyridyl) - 1,2 - diphenyl - ethane - 1,2 - diol; 1,2 - dichlorotetraphenyl - ethane; triphenyl glycol and triphenyl ethanolamine. Gellers mentioned are boron trifluoride, sulphuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, halides of Group III to V (Mendeleef) elements, possibly in admixture with mercaptans, alkyl metal and Grignard compounds as well as mixtures of amine salts and mercaptans, and strong reducing agents such as ascorbic acid. Conventional unsaturated polyesters and copolymerizable monomers may be used as well as conventional polyester additives. Prepolymers are obtained which can then be finally hardened.
