Abstract

1351194 Polycondensation catalysts for polyesters MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 29 April 1971 [26 May 1970 (4)] 12265/71 Heading C3R A process for preparing a polyester containing less than 1% by weight, based on the weight of the polyester, of diethylene glycol comprises carrying out the polycondensation in the presence of an antimony compound and a germanium compound, both compounds being miscible in the polycondensation system, and a phosphoric ester, wherein at least 0À035% of a mole of antimony atoms and no more than 0À02% of a mole of germanium atoms are added per mole of recurring unit of the resultant polyester and the atomic ratio of the germanium atom to the antimony atom is no more than 0À5. The Examples describe preparing polyesters from ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate, optionally with dimethyl isophthalate, using the following polycondensation catalysts, optionally as solutions in ethylene glycol, (a) the trimethyl, triethyl or triphenyl esters of phosphoric acid, (b) antimony trioxide, antimony acetate or antimony triethoxide and (c) amorphous or crystalline germanium dioxide.
