Abstract
1,181,024. Polyethylene terephthalate. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 12 June, 1968 [12 June, 1967], No. 28011/68. Heading C3R. In the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate by directly esterifying terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol and thereafter polycondensing the resulting ester, the formation of ether bonds is minimized by carrying out the esterification reaction in the presence of triethanolamine in an amount of 0À001% to 1%by weight of the terephthalic acid. Cobalt salts may be used as esterification catalysts and antimony trioxide (with or without phosphorous acid, aryl phosphites or aryl phosphates as stabilizers) may be used as a polycondensation catalyst.
