1,147,239. Poly glycol terephthalates). COURTAULDS Ltd. 20 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec., 1966], No. 57165/66. Heading C3R. In the manufacture of fibre-forming polyesters by (a) esterifying terephthalic acid with a polymethylene glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms and (b) polycondensing the resulting glycol ester or low molecular weight polymer thereof, there is used as esterification catalyst a compound containing manganese or cobalt in the form of an anion, e.g. potassium permanganate, sodium cobaltinitrite or a mixture thereof. Polycondensation may be effected in the presence of antimony trioxides as a catalyst and triphenyl phosphite or triphenyl phosphate as a stabilizer.
