Abstract

Polyesters, especially polymethylene terephthalates, obtained by polyesterifying a polycarboxylic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof) with a polyhydric alcohol are given a durable coloration by including in the mixture undergoing polyesterification a polynuclear aromatic dyestuff containing at least two groups capable of forming ester linkages with one or more of the other components in an amount not exceeding 0.5% by weight of the final polyester. In an example, ester-interchange was effected between dimethyl terephthate, dimethyl violanthrone-3 : 2-dicarboxylate (a dyestuff) and ethylene glycol in the presence of magnesium oxide and the resulting glycol esters were polycondensed to produce a polymer which was extruded, spun and drawn into purplish-pink fibres.
