Abstract

Complex esters are prepared by esterifying in one or more stages: (a) either (i) an aliphatic monohydric alcohol or mixture of such alcohols, or (ii) an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids; (b) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids; and (c) an aliphatic diol or mixture of diols, a molecular sieve being used as esterification catalyst, preferably in amounts of 0,01-10% by weight based on the combined weight of dicarboxylic acid and diol. The molecular sieves may be natural or synthetic zeolites. A water-entrainer such as benzene may be present. Specified monohydric alcohols are C8-C13 alcohols, such as 2-ethylhexanol, isooctanol, 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol and isotridecanol; specified monocarboxylic acids are C8-C10 acids, such as pelargonic and 2-ethylhexanoic acids; specified diacids are sebacic, adipic and azelaic acids; specified diols are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol and polyethylene glycol 200.
