Abstract

Complex esters are prepared by reacting the acidic and alcoholic reactants in the presence of an ester or salt of a phosphorus-containing acid. The ester is derived from the reaction of at least three different compounds, each having at least one carboxylic or hydroxy group, and at least one contains two or more carboxylic groups, and another contains two or more hydroxyl groups. Many mono- and poly-carboxylic acids or ether acids, monohydric and polyhydric alcohols and polyol ethers are listed and the preferred phosphorous compound is tributyl phosphate. The esters may be acid or glycol centred and the reaction may be in one or two stages and an esterification catalyst such as p-toluene sulphonic acid or sulphuric acid may be present. Examples describe the reaction of adipic acid, neopentyl glycol and tributyl phosphate followed by a treatment with pelargonic acid and the ester is washed with sodium carbonate, isopropanol, heptane and water. Specific esters mentioned are derived from adipic acid, neopentyl glycol and pelargonic acid; sebacic acid, neopentyl glycol and caprylic acid; sebacic acid, trimethylol propane and caprylic acid; sebacic acid, neopentyl glycol and 2,2,4-trimethyl pentanol; and azelaic acid, 2,21-diethyl 1-3 propane diol, and 2,2,4-trimethyl pentanol.
