Abstract

2-Methylene glutaric acid is prepared by reacting 2-methylene glutaronitrile with water in the presence of a mineral acid or an alkaline hydroxide. A catalyst such as copper, a copper compound, or mercuric sulphate may be included and the alkaline hydrolysis may be carried out in the presence of an alkanol such as methanol or ethanol.
