Abstract

Polyvinyl acetate hydrolysed to not more than 55 per cent and soluble in methanol is made by the alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate in the presence of excess methanol, an alkaline alcoholysis catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, in an amount not more than 15 per cent of the stoichiometric equivalent of the polyvinyl acetate, and water in an amount between 6.7 and 20 per cent by weight of the whole reaction solution. If desired, methyl acetate may replace up to 20 per cent by weight of the methanol. Films may be cast from methanol solutions of the polyvinyl alcohol-acetate and if desired the solutions may contain a water-soluble plasticizer such as glycerine, monacetin, diacetin or glycol. The partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate may be used as an adhesive.
