Abstract

1,209,193. #-Hydroxyalkyl esters. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 27 Dec., 1967, No. 58697/67. Heading C2C. #-Hydroxyalkyl esters of carboxylic acids are prepared by esterifying one mol. proportion of the acid with at least three mol. proportions of a vicinal alkylene oxide at a temperature not exceeding 125‹ C. in the presence of a catalytic proportion of the sodium and/or lithium salt of the acid. Examples describe the esterification of acetic acid by reaction with propylene oxide, and of methacrylic acid by reaction with ethylene oxide, but other fatty acids, aliphatic polycarboxylic acids, aromatic monocarboxylic or polycarboxylic acids may be used.
