Abstract

1417738 Catalyst for the preparation of polyesters EASTMAN KODAK CO 22 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8727/73 Heading C3R A linear polyester is prepared from a dicarboxylic acid ester and a glycol by carrying out both the ester interchange and the polycondensation in the presence of a catalyst which consists essentially of a soluble zinc cation and a soluble germanium cation, the zinc cation and the germanium cation being present in the catalyst in the ratio of 1À8 parts by weight of zinc cation to 1À0 part by weight of germanium cation. The examples describe the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol using, as catalyst, a mixture of zinc acetate dihydrate and germanium dioxide.
