1,236,478. Catalytic production of polyesters. SANDOZ Ltd. 10 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967: 28 March, 1968], No. 58739/68. Heading C3R. In a process for making polyesters from one or more aromatic and/or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or their polyester-forming derivatives and aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic or aromatic dihydric alcohols, there is used a catalyst comprising a mixture and/or an alloy or alloys of (a) antimony and (b) (zinc and/or cadmium and/or manganese) and/or (one or more alkaline earth metals) and/or (one or more alkali metals). The catalyst preferably contains 10 to 90% by weight of component (a) and 90 to 10% by weight of component (b). The alkali or alkaline earth metals may be used as a solution in ethylene glycol. In the examples, polyesters are made from (i) dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, with or without dimethyl isophthalate, pentaerythritol or a mixture of the diglycol ether of bisphenol A and pentaerythritol or (ii) dimethyl terephthalate and 1,4-bis- (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane. The catalysts used were either a mixture of or alloys of Sb and a single (b) metal or (i) Mn and Sr, (ii) Mn and Li, (iii) Mn and Ca, (iv) Na and Ca, (v) Mg, Mn and Na, (vi) Ba and Mn, (vii) Ca and Cd.
