Abstract

1,236,477. Catalysed production of polyesters. SANDOZ Ltd. 10 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967], No. 58738/68. Heading C3R. In a process for the production of polyesters from one or more aromatic and/or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or their polyester-forming derivatives and aliphatic cycloaliphatic and/or aromatic diols, there is used an esterification catalyst which comprises a mixture and/or an alloy or alloys of (a) antimony, (b) germanium and/or titanium and (c) (zinc and/or cadmium and/or manganese) and/or (one or more alkaline earth metals) and/or (one or more alkali metals). The alkali or alkaline earth metals may be used as a solution in ethylene glycol. The catalyst preferably contains 10-80% by weight of component (a), 10-80% by weight of component (b), and 5-70% by weight of component (c). In the examples, polyesters are made from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol with or without dimethyl isophthalate, 1,4-bis-[hydroxymethyl]-cyclohexane, the bisglycol ether of bisphenol A and pentaerythritol, in the presence of catalysts containing Sb, Ti and; (2) Mn; (3) Ca; (4) Li; (5) and (11), Zn; (6) Ba; (7) Sr; (9) Mg; (12b) Ca and Mn; (12c) Sr and Na; and Sb, Ge and; (1) and (10) Zn; (12a) Mn and Zn; and (8) an alloy of Sb with Zn, and Ge.
