1,236,479. Catalytic production of polyesters. SANDOZ Ltd. 10 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967; 28 March, 1968], No. 58740/68. Heading C3R. In a process for making polyesters from one or more aromatic and/or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, and aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic and/or aromatic dihydric alcohols, there is used a catalyst comprising mixtures and/or an alloy or alloys of:-(a) Ge and/or Sn and/or Pb and/or Ti and (b) (Zn and/or Cd and/or Mn) and/or (one or more alkaline earth metals) and/or (one or more alkali metals). The catalyst preferably contains 10-90% by weight of (a) and 90- 10% by weight of (b). The alkali or alkaline earth metals may he used as a solution in ethylene glycol. In the examples polyesters are made from (i) dimethylterephthalate and ethylene glycol, with or without dimethyl isophthalate or the diglycol ether of bis-phenol A and/or pentaerythritol or (ii) dimethyl terephthalate and 1,4-bis-(hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane, in the presence of catalyst containing Ti and (4) Ca; (5) and (21) Zn; (6) Na; (7) Mn; (8) Li; (9) Sr; (10) Mg; (11) Zn and Ca; (12) Mn and Ca and (13) Mn and Li; (15) Mn, Mg; (22a) Pb, Mn, Mg; (22b) Pb, Ca, Li; or containing Pb and (1) Mg; (2) Ca; or containing Ca and (3) Ge; (14) Pb and Mn; (17) Ge and Mn and (19) Sn and Mn; and also the following: (20) and (16) Zn, Mg, Ge; (18) Sn, Mn, Li; (22c) Ge, Pb, Sr and Na.
