Abstract

Polyalkylene terephthalates are made by transesterifying a dialkyl terephthalate with an aliphatic glycol and polycondensing the product in the presence of a catalyst which is (1) a naphtholate formed from a naphthol (e.g. betanaphthol) or a hydroxydinaphthyl (e.g. 2,21-dihydroxydinaphthyl) and a Group II metal (e.g. Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd or Hg) or (2) a mixture of such a naphthol or hydroxydinaphthyl and a Group II metal salt (e.g. zinc acetate). The transesterification may also be effected in the presence of these catalysts. In examples, dimethyl terephthalate was reacted with ethylene glycol.
