Abstract

A varnish for coating electrical conductors comprises: (1) a polyester containing two or more free hydroxyl groups and derived by reacting a diol, a polyol containing at least three hydroxyl groups and a diester of terephthalic acid, and (2) a polyisocyanate. The diol may be ethylene-, 1 : 3-propylene- or 1 : 4-butyleneglycol and the polyol may be glycerine, hexanetriol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol and reaction between these and the terephthalate is preferably effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. the oxides of lead, zinc, cerium or calcium or the alcoholates of aluminium or magnesium. The polyisocyanate is preferably blocked with a phenol or a tertiary alcohol and may be the reaction product of trimethylol propane or hexane triol with toluene-2 : 4-diisocyanite or a mixture of such reaction products. In examples, wire varnishes were made by dissolving the polyester in cresol, removing the catalyst by filtration, adding a blocked triisocyanite and diluting with xylol.
