Abstract

In the manufacture of linear polyesters by reesterifying a diol with an ester of a dicarboxylic acid with a monohydric alcohol and polycondensing this re-esterification product, there is used as a catalyst for the re-esterification a metal salt of silicic acid, arsenic acid, stannic acid, selenic acid or phosphoric acid (other than an alkaline earth metal salt of arsenic acid) in an amount of 0.005 to 0.05 mol. per cent calculated on the molar amount of the dicarboxylic acid ester. Specified catalysts are the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of silicic acid, stannic acid, selenic acid and phosphoric acid; the alkali metal salts of arsenic acid; secondary magnesium orthophosphate and manganese phosphate. Specified esters are those of terephthalic, isophthalic, phthalic, sebacic, adipic or succinic acids with alcohols containing 1-6 carbon atoms. Specified diols are ethylene, propylene, 1:4-butylene and 1:6-hexylene glycols. Examples describe the manufacture of fibre-forming polyethylene terephthalate by condensing ethylene glycol with dimethyl or dibutyl terephthalate using as a catalyst: (1) sodium silicate, (2) sodium stannate, and (3) manganous phosphate, antimony oxide and zinc acetate.
