Abstract
A polyester film, having a reduced tendency to crystallize compared with polyethylene terephthalate, is made by first forming a film from a linear copolyester derived from ethylene glycol, 95-65 mol. per cent of terephthalic acid and correspondingly 5-35 mol. per cent of isophthalic acid, then orienting the film and finally subjecting it to a heat treatment at such a temperature and for such a time as would, in the absence of a restraining tension, bring about shrinkage of the film. Either the film is allowed to shrink during the heat treatment, e.g. round the neck of a bottle or a foodstuff to be packaged, or it is held against shrinkage to produce a heat-set film useful in the manufacture of bags or dielectric materials. Orienting of the film is effected by stretching and/or rolling the extruded film in either or both the longitudinal and transverse directions. In an example film made by extrusion on to a rotating quench drum maintained at 80-90 DEG C. is continuously stretched 3X in the machine direction over differential rolls maintained at 80-90 DEG C. and then stretched 3X in the transverse direction in a tentering apparatus while maintaining the atmosphere round the film at 95-105 DEG C. The heat treatment may be effected at 104-105 DEG C. or in a hot water bath. The preparation of the copolyesters is claimed in Specification 825,550.
