Abstract
Fibre-forming polyethylene terephthalate is made by heating mono-hydroxyethyl terephthalate at a temperature above its melting point and preferably under reduced pressure. A small amount of a diol, e.g. bis-(betahydroxyethyl) terephthalate, may be added to the monohydroxyethyl terephthalate before polymerizing. The mono-hydroxyethyl ester is made by reacting ethylene oxide with terephthalic acid in an aqueous medium (see Group IV (b). Specifications 590,451, [Group IV], and 623,669, [Group IV (b)], are referred to.ALSO:Monohydroxyethyl terephthalate is made by reacting ethylene oxide with terephthalic acid in an aqueous medium, preferably in presence of sufficient of a base or an alkaline reacting salt of an alkali metal to convert all the terephthalic acid to the mono alkali metal salt. As a catalyst a terephthalate may be used, e.g. a terephthalate of an alkali metal, ammonium, pyridine or N,N-dimethylaniline. The catalyst may be formed in situ by interaction of a proportion of the terephthalic acid with a substance which forms a water-soluble terephthalate therewith, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium borate, ammonia, ammonium salts or amines. In the example, 1 mol. of terephthalic acid suspended in water containing 1 mol. of potassium hydroxide was heated in a water bath and saturated with ethylene oxide till complete solution was obtained. After boiling off the residual ethylene oxide the solution was cooled and sulphuric acid and water added to give a paste. This was filtered off, water washed and extracted with boiling water. The crude monohydroxyethyl terephthalate which separated on cooling the extract was recrystallized from water. Specifications 590,451, [Group IV], and 623,669 are referred to.
