Abstract

Linear quinacridone in the gamma crystal modification is made by heating an aqueous paste of finely divided crude quinacridone with an inert organic compound at a temperature between 80 DEG and 200 DEG C. without removing the water, the inert organic compound being stable and solid or liquid under the reaction conditions used, hydrocarbons and their halogen and nitro derivatives being excluded. The process is conducted with stirring and if necessary in an autoclave. Organic compounds specified are methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, glycerol, ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, acetone, dioxan, dimethylformamide, N-methylacetamide, butyrolactone, acetic acid, propionic acid, benzoic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, p-toluene sulphonamide, phenol, triethanolamine, aniline, quinoline, pyridine, N-methylpyrrolidone methyl ethyl ketone and tetramethylene sulphone.
