Abstract

The surface are of a crude pigment or dyestuff is increased by thoroughly mixing the pigment or dyestuff with a quantity of sulphuric acid which is sufficient to convert the pigment into its sulphate but insufficient to prevent the formation of a free-flowing powder, and subsequently mixing said free-flowing powder with water. The dyestuff or pigment may subsequently be milled, for example, with sand and water or an organic solvent. Examples illustrate the treatment of copper phthalo-cyanine, copper chlorophthalocyanine, 16:17 - dimethoxydibenzanthrone, 7:16 - dichloro-6:15-indanthrone and and 1:4:5:8-tetraamino-anthraquinone.
