Abstract

An essentially a -form copper phthalocyanine is made by milling by agitation with particulate grinding elements a slurry of a crude copper phthalocyanine in an aqueous medium which contains a surface-active agent in amount not more than 5% of the weight of copper phthalocyanine, said agitation being continued until at least 90% of the copper phthalocyanine is in the a -crystal form. The term "copper phthalocyanine" includes chloro derivatives of copper phthalocyanine containing up to 10% of chlorine. It is advantageous to increase the surface area of the product by milling in an aqueous solution of a surface-active agent used in amount greater than that described above or in an organic liquid such as methanol or ethanol. The product may be used in paste form or may be isolated in solid form by flocculation followed by filtration, washing and drying. Non-flocculating pigment compositions may be obtained by carrying out the second stage of the process in the presence of a basic phthalocyanine derivative of the type used in Specifications 972,805, 1,058,226, 1,082,945 and 1,082,967. A pigment composition comprising a fine dispersion of a -form copper phthalocyanine (which may contain up to 10% chlorine) in an aqueous solution of a resin salt is obtained by carrying out the second stage of the above process using as surface-active agent a water-soluble salt of a resin substance (e.g. potassium rosinate). The dispersion may then be flocculated by means of an electrolyte (e.g. an acid) which also precipitate the resinous substance.
