Abstract

Esters of carboxylic acids and tertiary aliphatic alcohols are prepared by the alcoholysis of esters of an acid and a primary and/or secondary aliphatic alcohol with a tertiary alcohol having a higher boiling point than the primary or alcohol, under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an alkali-metal alcoholate catalyst, and the primary and/or secondary alcohols are removed by fractional distillation during the alcoholysis. The catalyst, e.g. sodium methylate and potassium t butylate is added as a solid, or in solution in, for example, the tert-alcohol, and water may be removed from the reaction mixture before the addition of catalyst by boiling and distilling the vapour under a factionating column until the distillate is pure tert-alcohol. Mixed esters may be obtained by choosing the ratios of the components and controlling the quantity of liberated primary and secondary alcohols removed. Examples describe the preparation of t-butyl esters of caprylic, lauric and stearic acid from their methyl esters using potassium t-butylate and sodium methylate catalysts; of t-butyl and t-butyl-methyl diesters of terephthalic acid; and t amyl diester of sebacic acid.
