Abstract

The invention comprises 2 - acetyl - 7- oxo - 1,2,3,4,4a,4b,5,6,7,9,10,10a - dodecahydrophenanthrene of the formula <FORM:0825907/IV (b)/1> and the preparation thereof by reacting 1-vinyl-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalene with methyl vinyl ketone, e.g. in an inert solvent such as a lower aliphatic alcohol, a fatty acid or a saturated hydrocarbon, isomerizing the resulting 2 - acetyl - 7 - methoxy - 1,2,3,9,10,10a - hexahydro-phenanthrene in acid solution, e.g. in an inert solvent using dry hydrogen chloride, ketalizing the 2-acetyl-7-methoxy-1,2,3,4,9,10-hexahydrophenanthrene so obtained with ethylene glycol, and either reducing the resulting 2 - (11 - ethylenedioxyethyl) - 7 - methoxy - 1,2,3,4,9,10 - hexahydrophenanthrene in liquid ammonia with lithium and an alcohol at low temperature and hydrolysing the so-formed 2 - (11 - ethylenedioxyethyl) - 7 - methoxy - 1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,9,10,10a - decahydrophenanthrene in acid solution or reducing the same in liquid ammonia with potassium and ammonium chloride at low temperature, hydrolysing the resulting 2 - (11 - ethylenedioxyethyl) - 7 - methoxy - 1,2,3,4,4a,9,10,10a - octahydrophenanthrene to form 2-acetyl-7-methoxy-1,2,3,4,4a,9,10,10a-octahydrophenanthrene, ketalizing this compound with ethylene-glycol to form the cyclic ketal thereof, reducing the resulting ketal in liquid ammonia with lithium and an alcohol at a low temperature and hydrolysing the so-formed 2 - (11 - ethylenedioxyethyl) - 7 - methoxy - 1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,9,10,10a - decahydrophenanthrene. A detailed example is given.ALSO:A therapeutic composition, which may be administered orally or parenterally, contains as the active ingredient 2-acetyl-7-oxo-1,2,3,4, 4a,4b,5,6,7,9,10,10a - dodecahydrophenanthrene of the formula <FORM:0825907/VI/1> Thus the composition may be in the form of a tablet, syrup, elixir or injectable solution.
