Abstract

The invention comprises 2-p-chlorophenyl-3-methyl-2 : 3-butanediol, and the method of preparing it by the action of sodium cyanide on p-chloracetophenone, hydrolysis of the product with hydrochloric acid to give p-chloroatrolactamide, further hydrolysis to p-chloroatrolactic acid, conversion of this to its ethyl ester, and reaction of the ester with methyl magnesium iodide, decomposing the product with ammonium chloride and isolating the crystalline residue of the above compound, having the formula <FORM:0788896/IV (b)/1>
